Is Motorola a Chinese Company?

Motorola Mobility LLC is a smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturer. It is a subsidiary of the Chinese PC and other consumer electronics brand, Lenovo. Motorola Mobility came into existence in the year 2011 with the split of Motorola Inc. into two separate companies. Motorola Mobility was acquired by Google in May 2012, however Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo in January 2014 for $6.91 billion.

Products

Motorola Mobility designs and manufactures smartphones based on Android operating system. In fact, the first Android smartphones were sold by Motorola. The first Android smartphone, the Droid, was launched by Motorola in November 2009. Droid was marketed as a competitor to Apple’s iPhone, with 250,000 Droid sales within the first week of its launch. The first generation Moto X was launched in August 2013. Over the years, Motorola has launched multiple generations of Moto smartphones, such as Moto G, Moto E, Moto X Pro, Moto Z, Moto C, Moto Razor and Moto Edge and Edge+.

Motorola Mobility ventured into smartwatches with the launch of Motoactv in the year 2011. Motoactv is a smartwatch equipped with multiple hardware features and applications for various uses including fitness training. Moto 360 is another smartwatch option by Motorola. It runs on Google’s Android Wear OS.

Operations

Motorola Mobility primarily manufactures its smartphones in China and India. Even though the R&D and design development centre was retained by Lenovo after it purchased Motorola Mobility, the manufacturing base was shifted to China. In the recent years, Motorola has increased its manufacturing footprints in India as well. Devices manufactured in India mostly use components imported from China.

Motorola released two smartphones, Moto G60 and Moto G40 Fusion, in 2021 with the tagline ‘Made in India’.

Conclusion

Motorola Mobility was initially a part of the American company Motorola Inc. but broke away in 2011. Since 2014, it is under the ownership of Lenovo. While its headquarters is still in Chicago, the production takes place mostly in China.
